We have some great news! By an overwhelming 92-5 vote, the U.S. Senate on Tuesday passed an important procedural motion that will allow senators to vote on the Sportsmen’s Act of 2012 (S.3525) currently scheduled for this Thursday, but that could slip to Friday.

Passage of this pro-sportsmen’s legislation will promote, protect and preserve our nation’s hunting, shooting and conservation heritage for generations to come.

This omnibus bill contains many of the bills and re-authorizations that are important to state fish and wildlife agencies and our conservation partners. Specifically, the Sportsman Act of 2012 represents a compilation of 19 bipartisan bills important to the sportsmen’s community to support access to recreational hunting and fishing and conservation of habitat and species. A similar package of bills–the Sportsmen’s Heritage Act of 2012 (H.R.4089)–was passed by the House in the spring by a bipartisan vote of 276 to 146.
This historic legislation is comprised of a number of top legislative priorities for Kentucky. This includes:
•Making Public Lands Public (S.901) that sets aside Land Water Conservation Funding to improve access to hunting, fishing, and other recreational purposes on existing federal lands;
•Target Practice and Marksmanship Training Support Act (S.1249) that amends the Pittman-Robertson Act by allowing states more funds available for a longer period of time for the creation and maintenance of shooting ranges;
•The Hunting, Fishing and Recreational Shooting Protection Act (S.838) that specifically excludes ammo and fishing tackle from the Toxic Substances Control Act, leaving decisions about tackle to State Fish and Game Agencies and the Fish and Wildlife Service; and the
•National Fish Habitat Conservation Act (S.1201 that creates a national voluntary grant program to protect and improve fish habitat by improving water quality and quantity across the nation.
This Sportsmen’s Act of 2012 also includes the reauthorization of the North American Wetlands Conservation Act (NAWCA) (S. 2282) to protect habitat that is critically important for migratory birds, such as ducks and other wildlife and the Neotropical Migratory Birds Act to continue conservation efforts of critical bird habitat with 28 Projects in 26 Countries. Nearly 50 sportsmen and conservation organizations including the National Rifle Association (NRA), the National Shooting Sports Foundation, Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation, Ducks Unlimited, National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF), Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation (RMEF), American Sportfishing Association, and The Nature Conservancy (TNC) are championing S.3525.
The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources (KDFWR) also strongly supports this bi-partisan legislation and has been working closely with Kentucky congressional delegation to promote its passage.
