there already are some real neat prefab options... I have been looking at some I saw in Somerset as my house has a crawl space that we can get in from inside the home but it is not a full basement. I have thought of either putting one in the ground outside the home OR digging out enough for one of the small models in the crawl space. I think these are an excellent idea but if you had it in the garage, what would you do if the garage collapsed on it? Would make it tough to get out. But then again, I guess something could be laying on the outside as well. Kudos to you for going the extra mile to protect the family.

lol @ Re3, Katie I have not gone the extra mile myself but wanted to put the info back out there... After seeing these homes WITH basements get leveled and people in the basements get injured or killed it got me thinking again.

...and I figured if I had one I would keep a HiLift Jack and a strong beam in it for those times where something might be ontop of it. The last one does have a winch to open the door if it gets stuck etc.

I see your point on a basement not being the absolute life and limb saver we think it is....we have a crawl space as well, accessible from a closet floor in the house, if I moved alot of crap outta the way, lol. I don't think we'd be safe there, and now I'm rethinking going to the neighbor's basement accross the street. Not only is the basement there dark and dungeon-like, the long unemployed woman there lives alone with a bunch of indoor cats and lotsa pills, and hubby is allergic to cats. I'm not so sure we'd be welcome there anymore anyways, she's very ticked off and hating the new neighbor who keeps trapping all the outdoor cats and taking them to the animal shelter, and we are so grateful for it!! She likely knows how happy we must be, I've been bitchin about cat pee n poop for years. I've lost countless flowerbeds over the years and had given up, the stench as you walk up to a couple of last year's litter boxes is still funky....I guess I'm sacrificing a tornado shelter for flowers and a smirky smile now that there's no more of her "outdoor pets".

Funny thing we spent most of the day today doing research and talking to supply companies about these. Don't do anything just yet E. I think there may be a good market for these for the next few years. We have been looking at the last one you posted last. The more you hear people talk is how fast it came on them. I'm not sure they would have time to go out in yard.
crwky, I would think with all of the doppler, etc that is available now, it would be almost difficult not to have enough time, unless, that is you are totally oblivious. If it was in the garage, I would think it would be hard to keep it uncovered to get into quickly. JMO
I agree with you crwky on how fast the storms blew thru, some of the worst storms last week went thru 60-70 mph.... If a basement isn't a sure thing on saving my family, I'd like to know more about these fiberglass mole holes I can stick out yonder in the yard and still get inside within a few secs!! I wouldn't put it in a garage and have to move a vehicle far enough away to insure that the car wouldn't end up crashing thru into my lap. If somebody ever hears of a $ amount and if there's an installer in the region, I'd like to know.

In my garage I was going to ask the company if the opening could be put in my walkway area. Basically the hole would be from the walkway over to the first car parking spot then they would put the unit in and fill in where the Durango goes but then the entrance would be something I would basically walk over every day. In the walk way I would be pretty darn sure there would never be anything left over top of it. As far as time wise goes I would not worry about time too much myself. I would have electric ran into it with a UPS and or the outdoor version (maybe water too as the outdoor spot I was thinking about is in a spot where I could put a simple drain that would lead out of a slope area and into the front yard somewhere) Anyway when I would see a storm approaching that was tornadic I would be in it. There was no excuse for people in Eastery KY to be out and about when this last storm came through. And people did see it coming in addition to radar. Most were not out they were just not in good safe spots for the size of the storm but some indeed were.
I have thought about asking my brother how much it would cost for he and I to come up with something and build it as I want it since he has the concrete/steel saws etc. to cut through the garage floor but then again there is always the comfort of having a contractor that has a proven method coming in and doing it as well.
C are you saying this might be something you carry / do?

that is the installed price the only way the price can be higher is if we hit rock and have to rent an air hammer to break thru then it goes up to 120 per hour and half the rental cost
