From Dakota Meyer,

Memorial Day 2012
Memorial Day, the official start of summer, is upon us once more. Pools are re-opened, barbeques are fired up and friends and family gather in backyards across the country to fellowship over burgers and beers. Sure, this kick-off to a new season gives us all a reason to celebrate, but it also gives us the opportunity to stop and remember those who have given their lives for our freedom.

We live in the greatest country in the world! It isn't perfect here in the United States of America, but it's still better than anywhere else. We enjoy freedoms here that allow us to choose our own paths and make our own decisions; freedoms that cannot be found anywhere else on this planet. But these freedoms were not just given to us; they were earned by men and women willing to lay down their lives to protect them.

It's easy to become complacent in this country because we have enjoyed this way of living for so long that now we expect, rather than respect the abundance of choices that we have. This becomes a problem when we start forgetting the price that was paid for us to live in this great country.

Many lives have been lost to protect our rights over the years, and the fight is never over. We must continue to stand up for our country, for our freedom. We must recognize and honor those who willingly volunteer to defend us. And, we must never forget those who made the ultimate sacrifice protecting our homeland.

So, this weekend, as you celebrate Memorial Day, I hope you wear the red, white and blue with pride and you remember what this holiday is really about. Think about the Americans living on the other side of the planet, in the Afghanistan heat. Remember them as you sip your cool, refreshing lemonade. Think about the families who would give anything to share one more backyard barbeque with a loved one they lost to war. Think about the men and women who have died so that you can celebrate this holiday in the safety of your own home, with the comfort of your friends and family around.

We owe it to our country to fight for the memory of those who gave all. Let us never forget!

Semper Fi,
Dakota

Yep, Memorial Day, the 4th and some other designated days are great to remember the Military. For myself, now that I am getting older, I remember them most every day. My father was in the Navy, graduated from Annapolis and died in the Philippines. I was too young to remember him.

It's still hard on GWW after all these years...the national cemeteries remind him of Arlington where he was part of the ceremonial guard at burials after he was released from the Naval Medical Center at Bethesda MD. Taps really get him... :( But lunch at Lure helped! :)

...a little thought for those that want to remove Confederate Memorials..... (not taking sides here just shining light on history)

America’s Civil War, spanning 1861-65, resulted in the death of more than 620,000 soldiers. Across the nation, communities independently initiated springtime memorials to honor those who had fallen. The tributes frequently included prayers for those lost and flowers on gravesites.
In 1868, the 30th of May was designated “Decoration Day” to recognize Civil War soldiers. The date was chosen because it wasn’t associated with any battle. A commemoration was held at Arlington National Cemetery and included 5,000 attendees decorating the graves of 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers with flowers and American flags. Hymns were sung, and prayers were shared during the ceremony.
When America entered World War I, the tribute changed to include all soldiers and gradually became known as “Memorial Day,” honoring the sacrifice of all military personnel. In 1971, it was declared a federal holiday and designated as the last Monday in May

Keep the reason for the long weekend on your mind this week.
Lake Cumberland is surrounded by cemeteries full of veterans that paid it all so we could live free. Take pause while out this weekend or if you can dock just for a couple of hours and visit one of the services in the area.
Sadly Mill Springs. ...the site of the Unions first major victory of the Civil War does NOT have plans for services. :-( It will however be open https://www.facebook.com/MillSpringsBat ... 2970637041

If you have info on what day and time ceremonies will be held around the lake please comment (https://www.facebook.com/groups/LakeCum ... 3717440801) and I will try to keep this post updated for those that want to attend. It is a great way to teach those younger respect for our nation's fallen and what it took to get and keep our republic.

Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer season

Early Observances of Memorial Day
The Civil War, which ended in the spring of 1865, claimed more lives than any conflict in U.S. history and required the establishment of the country’s first national cemeteries.

By the late 1860s, Americans in various towns and cities had begun holding springtime tributes to these countless fallen soldiers, decorating their graves with flowers and reciting prayers.

Did you know? Each year on Memorial Day a national moment of remembrance takes place at 3:00 p.m. local time.

It is unclear where exactly this tradition originated; numerous different communities may have independently initiated the memorial gatherings. And some records show that one of the earliest Memorial Day commemorations was organized by a group of formerly enslaved people in Charleston, South Carolina less than a month after the Confederacy surrendered in 1865. Nevertheless, in 1966 the federal government declared Waterloo, New York, the official birthplace of Memorial Day.

May 26
Poppy Day is celebrated in countries around the world. The American Legion brought National Poppy Day® to the United States by asking Congress to designate the Friday before Memorial Day, as National Poppy Day. On May 26, wear a red poppy to honor the fallen and support the living who have worn our nation's uniform.
