I know most of them on the market are crap. Most are made in China or somewhere overseas. There are some types that are made in the USA and I have a thread on them in the MADE IN the USA section of this forum. However for home use about the best I can do is find ones that are designed and engineered in the USA.
I guess that is better than nothing but not good enough for me to put in the MIUSA section.
But for those that like me went to CFL to be greener and to save energy but then do not like the mercury content, ease of breakage, etc.
Here are some LED solutions that I have found to work pretty well.
For normal bulb replacement to LED I use the Pharox 300s as my favorite for now.
I have tried MANY LED bulb types with the Pharox 300s having the best overall performance thus far.

Today I replaced some of the Chandelier bulbs in a ceiling fan and used this Bulbbrite Bulb. It uses 2.5 watts and is rated to the output of a 25 watt but from what I can tell it puts out the same amount of light as the 40 watt Chandelier bulbs I replaced. Sure they are expensive but if you had used 4 of the 40 or more watt bulbs in such a fixture very much the 2.5s should pay for themselves pretty quick. Plus they are at least engineered in the USA. They come in clear and frost and fit a normal home socket. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0030AX0OK
