The bad part to all of this is they will get to keep their jobs, union says they have "help" programs for their problem.. This is during their lunch at a public park - over 10 days.... :-o X(
You can bet if they had an accident one of those afternoons, they would have sued the company...

Let me think about this, if you had 10's of thousands of workers wanting your job.... =;

Of course I guess it is a small number of people as compared to how many work at the plant.

I wouldn't be too sure about that. In my union, a failed drug screening is one of the few reasons a company can fire you on the spot and the union won't even be willing to listen to your side of the story. You can admit to a problem before you get caught and they will fight for you to keep your job while getting "help", but once you get caught, it's too late.
I've seen quite a few guys lose their job over it.

As a follow up for those of you who believe that the unions just blindly stand up for everyone:
Today Chrysler announced that 13 of the 15 people identified in the video have been discharged. Two employees have been laid-off wtihout pay for a period of one month.

Chrysler has issued the following statement:

Response to Query: Chrysler Group Closes Jefferson North Employee Cases

Chrysler Group Closes Jefferson North Employee Cases Chrysler Group has completed its investigation of the Jefferson North employees recently suspended for inappropriate conduct during their lunch period. It has been determined that 13 employees engaged in behavior that violated the Company¿s Standards of Conduct and these 13 employees were discharged today. Two remaining employees will receive a one month disciplinary layoff without pay.

It's not just Chrysler and it's not just Michigan...

I have old friends who worked at Ford in Louisville (mostly since retired with hefty retirements) who used to brag (to me) about them doing many of those things shown in the video. I was in management (different company and in Lexington) and they used to razz me all the time about "getting paid to sit on (their) butts" while I had to work 60 hour weeks.

I don't have much sympathy.

And, while I have owned Jeeps since 1986 and loved them, I think I have bought my last one.

First of all what does a person's retirement benefit have to do with men who were obviously doing something during their break that they should not have been doing?

Second, just because you knew some friends that may have had a lame job, does not mean everyone who works at Ford or a union doesn't work hard. That job was obviously approved by Ford Motor Company.

Most auto workers work hard. Try standing in one spot doing the same repetiative motions for 8 to 10 hours a day. Not that easy. I am not saying that there might have been at one time, jobs that were easier than others, off of the assembly line. But most of those jobs were from many many years ago and no longer there.

I think people should stop criticizing all auto workers over the ones who were stupid to be doing those things, and taking their jobs for granted. And in my opinion they should be fired. But leave the hard working good guy alone.

I get what Bob is saying except for buying his last Jeep. This makes me (my wife) want to buy one seeing it is all American and that they took care of the situation once they found out. It is hard to know until someone blows a whistle and once that was done I am glad to see they did not get to stick around. Chrysler said there were safeguards to keep it from transferring issues to the vehicles. I think those that were most in danger were their co-workers.

I do think some are overpaid for what they do because of the union but I will not let that stop me from trying to support the rest that are earning their pay. And we all have to admit some of the over the top retirement deals and inflated salaries are what helped lead to these compaines struggles. But Sunset lady is right in that it does not apply to this story. However it is also good to take in the whole picture.

I hope all of the once Big 3 get their act together and and get back on top. I will do my small part and try to buy from them where I can.

E this conversation could go on forever, sort of like politics and religion, everyone has their opinion of auto workers and they will not be changed. And that is fine, this is a free country. This is the first time I have ever replied to a thread like this, I am not a confrontational person. I just find a lot of generalizations about all auto workers unfair.

As far as what they get paid, that is also a sore spot for me, why do people want to regulate who gets paid what. Why doesn't these big hollywood salaries and athlete salaries not fire people up. Are those people worth that kind of money ? In my opinion I don't think so, but you don't hear things about them. Their salaries are what causes a family not to be able to afford to see games and movies too.

As far as the bailout, I did not agree with that either. But Ford did not take the money.

These are just my opinions, there are always two sides to every story. Everyone is free to spend their money on whatever they want.

E I applaud you on trying to buy American products. We should try and support our country and workers.

I hear ya Sunset Lady. I really don't agree with some of the sport player salaries either and I have made comments in that direction before as well.

I am pro Ford, Chevrolet and Dodge and the people that earn their living making them. ;) I'm sooo glad to see Imaposer's post that the few that could have made the rest look bad were punished.

PS Please reply to these threads more often. Most of us here do our best to not let it be personal.

Well except than dang RE3 everytime someone says "old" on here she assumes it is about her. =))

My apologies, Sunset Lady. I did not say -nor imply- that all auto workers were like those guys in the video and I did not say that all Ford workers had it easy. I happen to know several Chrysler and Ford workers (personally) and I am aware of the problems that they face every day.

The part about my retired friends is true. I am also retired and, when we do get together occasionally, they really like to re-live their work experiences. They also like to chide me about their retirement benefits compared with mine. They live quite well in their retirements.

No problem Captain Bob. I think I was just expressing frustration with how the media and some people want to link auto workers with being lazy and overpaid. As I stated above, most do work hard. Lots of changes have happened with the benefits also. Its a different world now, than when promises were made to the workers.

Sunset lady,

Let me get this right. Because they have a job thst is not easy, we should look the other way at thier stupid antics? This is my opinion, I think unoins have caused more trouble than they have done good. When you have teachers that can't teach we can't fire them, you have workers that only do a minimum required with out trying to improve, the union protects them. The union sets a daily quota for many jobs and if you are done an hour early, you can sit on your butt and collect your pay. Unions are a crooked bunch of folks that i think should be punished. as I said this is my opinion! Yes I have been in a union. X(

I am not here defending unions or their practices. As I stated in my post earlier, I agree the people who were on their break drinking and doing drugs should have been fired. I will also agree if the teacher is not doing their job they should be fired also.
The point I was trying to make is that, when this story breaks in the media, people automatically assume that all auto workers do these things. They also assume that these workers sit around and do nothing all day. When the majority of them work hard and follow the rules. And I will also state that I only know about the Ford system. I do not know anything about the other companies.
