"No. She hit a sumberged log after going through Low Gap cut through on the opposite side from Jamestown Marina."-Marine Assist (Talking about bubbles outdrive loss)
Sorry Capt. Don, but this is not true. Usually you get it right but I had to clarify this one. I was in the boat and we were no where near the cut through when we lost the outdrive. Just wanted to let everyone know that not everything you hear is true. Even from the pros(but I've been coming to LC for 20yrs and would have never tried going through low gap at this level). And yes, I say Marine Assist is a professional operation. But we all get it wrong sometimes.
That being said, if it weren't for MA, that boat would have sunk. So anyone with a single engine small boat, you shuold check your insurance and make sure it covers Marine Assist service. If not, I suggest looking into getting a Marine Assist memebership. It was a very scary day for us.

Of all the things to be prepared for while boating, I think this is the worst. Just really nothing you can do if the outdrive tears the bellows loose from the upper unit. I think it's amazing that Bubbles(with help) was able to keep this boat from sinking. Even more amazing is that her passengers were sober enough to be helping.

Re: False
All you have to do to slow the leak to a crawl is stuff it with something. I think you guys used towels right ___? Anything to fill that sizable hole will keep it afloat indefinitely while the bilge pump can keep up. The key it you have to act fast as it is a large hole.
Re: False
Correct, KR jumped in and stuffed the whole, where the drive used to be, with a towel. While I got on the radio and called for help while some friends started towing us to State. Then when MA arrived, he tossed over a pump (bilge pump just couldn't keep up). I took the clips and had to go head first through about 2 feet of water in the bilge to get to the battery and get the pump going, which saved the boat.
I've been boating on LC for 25+ yrs and that's the oddest thing I've ever seen. Didn't feel like we hit anything. Just a small thump and the drive was gone. Makes me think there were already issues with the drive to begin with.

Re: False
Years ago a friend with a twin engine scarab was on the Ky river and lost an outdrive, luckily the boat had enough power to get on plane with one engine so he kept it up enough which held the gaping hole out of the water. Trick was to drop off the passenger quickily so he could get the trailer while the boat stayed out doing large circles. Then he said it was the fastest he ever loaded a boat on a trailer. Drive was still hanging on by the cables.

Adrenaline is an amazing drug! It'll make you do things you never thought you could do
Even a broken clock is right twice a day

Funny thing is...yall keep saying how lucky I was to NOT lose the boat. At the time I thought the same thing. But looking back....sure do wish that damned thing had sunk! Aint been nothing but bad luck for me!
And ___....I am soooo proud of you for this topic of discussion and how nice you are being!
And another thing.....the bilge was unable to keep up, like ___ said, we did need marine assist's pump.
Once again.....that is a day I will never forget! MAYDAY MAYDAY WE ARE GOING DOWN AROUND LOW GAP!

"We are going down around low gap". Be careful bubbles, some might take that offensively.
And you are sooo right Katie. It's unreal the power of adrenaline. It almost makes me understand why someone would jump out of a perfectly good plane. Wait no it doesn't.

Should have said, "Mayday, Mayday, we are going down around low gap due to excessive leakage" Now that would have gotten their attention.

Well, it took me 10 minutes to get to you after I got your MAYDAY call on the radio. At that time I met up with you guys being towed by another boat and you were heading through the Low Gap cut through. You had been under tow for 10 minutes and it took some time to simply get tied up the the boat towing you. That means the incident happened on the opposite side of the Low Gap cut through from Jamestown, somewhere in front of the State Park. The lake water level was at full pool then, because this was before the dam had been an issue. It was my first season here, my second week here, my 3rd call here and first MAYDAY here.
So, no, I was not there at the actual "site" where it happened, but I can pretty much put the pieces together.
And you are right about not believing everything you read online.
I appreciate the "plug" though.
