Iowa Dam Break: Damage along Lake Delhi, Maquoketa River (VIDEO)
July 25th, 2010

Yesterday a dam break in Eastern Iowa did millions of dollars worth of damage. The dam at Lake Delhi breached, sending a flood of water into the Maquoketa River in Delhi, Iowa. A member of the Delhi Fire Department notes that over 15 inches of rain fell within 48 hours.

This heavy rain had dire consequences. The rainfall overburdened an 83-year-old dam, which subsequently ruptured. The section was 125 X 60 and was the worst damage that one firefighter had ever seen.

At least 6 homes were swept away with flood waters. The damage is devastating, and many in the town don’t know what they are going to do. About 700 homes and cabins were evacuated as nearby towns heard of the incident.

Joan Jett and Styx were set to perform at a County Fair, but their performances were called off in the wake of the major flood caused by this disaster.

The video coverage from the Associated Press gives you an idea of the damage caused by the Iowa Dam break. The only other comparable damage seen in recent times was the massive flooding in Nashville, Tennessee earlier this year and the flash flood at an Arkansas park.

The Correct Craft (Ski Nautique, etc.) boaters forum I belong to has a lot of first hand accounts including the initial report that the lake was flooding and WHY, prior to the dam break. Lots of pictures of the devastation too. Many of my friends from the forum have their boats there and many were sunk, lost or damaged or went over the dam. Quite a disaster to those who live on the lake as well as below the dam. Our thoughts and prayers go out to them.
OH! I just remembered, here I can post a link to the forum! ;)

I cringe to think of the damage, death and loss if the dam at LC went out.... that's a sad situation in Iowa. :(

When we hi-jack a thread we really don't have any rules to tell us that we've distracted from the original topic. Back to the regularly scheduled bullshit. :ymhug:
