Just ate some Elk fresh out of colorado that dad brought back does that count? Or the freezer full of Deer I have? I no longer have a garden in the back yard since it made better sense to build a bigger one on the farm and all of us use it. Cost a lot less and is a lot less time to run the tractor across a field and then use the tobacco setter to set the garden instead of by hand at home.

With Free ranging chickens surrounding the old farm stead. and a well maintained chicken house that would hold 40 head just 20 feet from the back door. I well remember my grand mother in South East Kansas being able to swing Two flaking chickens, One in each hand and snapping their heads off and letting them flap to the ground and bleed out.

she had a tub of boiling water that they were dipped in and de feathered. With in a few minutes they were in the big black skillet nicely cut and soon to be our Sunday dinner.

Must have been something some one said in Sunday school that led to such Actions ! Hehehe

As good as grannys?NO, never. Able to feed my family without Mr. Kroger or big brothers help? Absolutely. I would hate to think I couldn't. With deer and turkey within 100 yards, Lake Cumberland AND the Cumberland River just 5 smiles away, 46 chickens roaming around, more eggs than we can eat, 200' of garden in the south pasture and Angus cows out back...lack of food won't be our demise. Now if I can only get that Mountain Dew recipe down. Did I mention molassis beer?
