Question for the computer geeks out there

Post by LC addict »

I have 4 computers on my home network, but my main computer keeps coming up with the message "Windows-System error There is an IP address conflict with another system on the network". What does this mean? Do I need to do something about it?

Pre2012-Conley Bottom Mostly, Waitsboro, Alligator I&II ramps, Leesford, Pulaski County Park (when it has water), Grider, State Dock (via boat), and Jamestown are a few places you might find me.

It means one of your computers is going to get a connection on that network and the other will not while they are both up.

Change one of their IP addresses..

How are your IP addresses assigned?

E, I am technologically impaired, I have no idea how IP addresses are assigned. How do I change them?

yes, it means you need to throw all four computers out the window, and go sit down and have a drink,... :) and another,.....and another. :) There......all fixed.

jazzgirl is correct for the most part. Just throw 3 out the window and the error will go away.

I read this awhile back on ip addresses...

put the IP address
(example: 207.61.241.100) and the corresponding port number (example: 9090) into the proper place in your browser. When going through the lists looking for ones that work, the ones with port numbers starting with "80" or "90" usually work better than the ones starting with "31" as far as posting is concerned.

For Internet Explorer go to:
tools
internet options
connections tab
Lan settings
enter the numbers into the proxy settings box

for Firefox go to:
tools
options
advanced
network tab
click on settings
enter the numbers under "manual proxy configuration"

LC, you first need to know your IP address range.

Geez, this sounds difficult! My son said it should change automatically but evidently it didn't when I added the new computer...... I'm thinking maybe I'll just throw out the one that is confused! The rest all seem to work okay. I guess its true....computers are only as smart as the operators.....no comments from the peanut gallery!
