I'm riding the fence on this one, I'm a dog owner(2) and have a 4 month old in the house. First off if either of my dogs were mean or had ever shown aggressive behavior they would have to go, I am just not willing to take any chances, I have owned one of the dogs for 13 years but she would have to go if I though there was any chance of her harming the baby. I don't have any problem with filing charges against the owner if it can be proven that the owner was aware of the dogs aggressive behavior. It's a sad story none the less.

I don't think the dog was thinking about Jail time when it did it. My point is a lot of people have a family dog they love and trust. This guys was getting ready to leave the house that day to go get baby gates and a baby monitor when he discovered the dog had taken the baby.
Its sad, VERY sad and unfortunate but not a "jail" issue. $h1t happens. Its not like the guy was cooking meth.

Yes, it is a sad situation. Obviously this dog didn't show this type of behavior or certainly the owner would have taken action. I'm having a hard time with this one. On one hand it seems like a tragic accident. On the other hand, how do you not hear the commotion of a dog getting up in a crib and dragging your kid out of the house. Was there no noise? Don't most people with babies have those monitors in the room so you can hear what is going on at all times? And, how is this particular accident different from those who accidentally leave their kids in hot cars, and they die. They usually get some sort of punishment. I guess the "sh1t happens" defense doesn't work for them.

JMO...This K9 was doing more of what instincs told it to, rather than commiting a malious act. ALL dogs have God given instincs although this animal was closer kin to its wild side than our domesticated dogs. I have noticed K9s alert on newborn creatures of any animal, (humans, chicks, rabbit, or other dogs) quicker than older "kids". I would like to know more of the circumstances surronding this situation, ie was the baby left alone crying while the K9 was left outside wondering, "what is that sound, is it an abandoned or injuried pup"? Was the dog introduced to the infant? Had it ever been around other babys? And YES, if any animal was to grab my child, its day has come. There would be no pics on TV of some handler leading it off, dragging maybe, but not leading. I would then look in the mirror and wonder what did Ido wrong to cause this in the first place. BTW I killed one of my dogs (not a German Shepherd) several years ago after he bit me 7-8 times. A .243 round beats a full house. JMO

They did not have a monitor yet and it was a pretty darn big house.
...and I am also very symphathetic for those that leave their kids in hot cars. If it was an accident and the person was not drunk or something like that imparing them then it is another case of $h1t happens. Especially if it is a routine trip that normally the kid is not along for.

I agree Denmark, this dog obviously went into "instinct" mode... should NEVER have been able to get to the crib to start with.... Jail, I don't know enough yet to make a comment, very very sad for the child...
When I had my first baby, we had a german short hair hunting dog, normally kept out in unheated garage, but winter was BAD that year in Wisconsin... she was in the bedroom upstairs with Jeff our first nite home, I down on the couch with babe and when he started crying in the nite, she went berserk... wanted out of the room with all of her might, have no clue what she would have done, but that sealed the deal for me. We also had a cocker mix, had been Jeff's baby for 3 years, turned on me and Jason when he was approx 4 mos old... I verbalized, that's it, you are outta here... just can't take any chances with any pet... period.

Hmmm, not sure how I feel about this one. Any number of things could have been going on at the time. Running sweeper, possibly, while baby was napping. Drying hair, putting clothes in washer or dryer? Trying to get a multitude of chores done before it was feeding time again. Could be the reason the dog wasn't heard getting into the crib. Jail time? No. These people will have a lifetime of grief already on their heads, even if the baby survives. That's punishment enough, even though I'm not sure they deserve to be punished at all.

Just read the updated story with all the details. I don't think any charges should be filed. I also hope they find a home for the dog and don't have to put it down.

Such people shouldn't be allowed to reproduce.
