At first it sounds like a fun-ride- South Carolina law allowing open container on boats and those behind the wheel free to partake, too. But the ole saying "it sneaks up on you" is never so true as when you’re drinking on a boat and you mix in a dangerous ingredient called sun.
"Being out in the direct sun all day, that can intensify the effect of the alcohol,” SC DNR’s Lt Michael Brock said. “So the operator has to be aware of how the alcohol is affecting them on a hot day.”
Just as motorists can be charged with driving under the influence for a blood alcohol content of .08 percent, boat operators can get a BUI for the same.
While drinking and boating is allowed, going over the limit can certainly cost you. And not just in fines.
"The minimum fine is $470 and in addition they lose their right to boat for a year, and they are required to take mandatory boating and alcohol classes,” Brock said.
Brock says while they’re books aren't overflowing with BUI’s so far this summer, the Fourth of July itself brought in a couple. He warns, they exercise zero-tolerance on this- so know your limits and pack a variety inside that cooler.
"Mix in water, Gatorade, stay hydrated. Monitor your intake. As everybody knows- it affects each person differently, and the operator just needs to know their limits,” Brock said.
