I think this kind of program is what many of his "supporters" were hoping for... I hope it doesn't come to this.

All right!! Where do I sign up for a grant??? Looks like I can get one to pay off the boat. I want some of this money action and not have to pay it back. Yeah right, fat chance a middle class, soon to be low class person will get any.

I could use some Mortgage Assistance! ......and I can prove it!

Jaybird, apply now, at the rate we are all going we will all be low class by the time the funds arrive. The chance of getting any of that cash is slim & none. This is one of those things that a white won't get.

I looked into these years ago. Single mom, kids, don't work, has a live in boy friend, ( who is also on wellfare) and can't get out to get a job because they don't have a car.

If you are in the catagory above, you just hit the jackpot.

I sure don't remember welfare being what it is today. If you were out of work (notice I said out of work, not never worked), on unemployment and couldn't make ends meet, you could get what was called government commodities. That would be can ham, spam, cheese, peanut butter, etc that looked like it came from the Army because it was in that drab olive green packaging. later on they introduced food stamps to just buy food. I never heard of people actually getting cash. If you needed say furniture, if you were flooded out or burned out, the Salvation Army could come up with perhaps a refrigerator and bedding for you, maybe even a voucher to pick up something. Again never any cash handouts. I don't remember people not working for a living. Where I was from it was frowned on to live on the system for what little there was. In other words you were expected to eventually get back on your feet. Even if you were the working poor. If you were paying on a mortgage and couldn't come up with the payment, chances are you lost your house. I guess people learned to work the system and have now grown to expect it.

Powdered Milk
Powdered Eggs
Rice
Spam
Navy beans
Butter Beans (really huge - looked like lima beans only pale brown )
I must be older than you - no cheese and peanut butter.....
Anything else must have been "seasonal". These were the staples in my house.
If you needed clothes, you went to salvation army. Mostly the neighbors would pass stuff down. There is a picture here...

Neighbors help take care of neighbors. Families help take care of families. Only when you're down and out. You should not have to help take care of the whole country for years upon years.

Cheese was in a box about 3 inches square and maybe a foot long solid block you cut up. Peanut butter in a big can. The stuff looked like the institutional kind I saw in the Marines or at the school cafeterias.

Mmm goverment cheese, bologna, saltine crackers. Use to trade a old man 1 pack of Marlboro reds to a block of G-cheese. It was like Velveeta on steriods.
