Illinois School Nixes Basketball Team's Trip to Arizona Over Immigration Law.

Parents in Illinois are outraged over a move by a local high school to scrap its girls basketball team's trip to Arizona over the Grand Canyon State’s new immigration law.

The Highland Park High School varsity basketball team has been selling cookies for months to raise money for a tournament in Arizona..

Now, after winning their first conference title in 26 years, the girls are being denied the opportunity to play in the tournament over safety concerns and because the trip “would not be aligned” with the school's “beliefs and values,” Assistant Superintendent Suzan Hebson told the Chicago Tribune.

Hebson said Arizona is off-limits, at least until it’s more clear how the state’s new law, which makes it a crime to be in the country illegally, will be enforced.

"We would want to ensure that all of our students had the opportunity to be included and be safe and be able to enjoy the experience," Hebson told the Tribune about the tournament. "We wouldn't necessarily be able to guarantee that."

LOS ANGELES -- The City Council voted Wednesday to boycott Arizona businesses, making Los Angeles the largest city to take such action to protest the state's tough new law targeting illegal immigration.

The 13-1 vote, which came after emotional discussion in which several council members recounted their immigrant ancestors, was largely symbolic since only a small percentage of the city's business dealings are affected.

"An immigrant city, an international city, (Los Angeles) needs to have its voice heard," Councilman Ed Reyes said. "It is crucial this great city take a stand."

The resolution is expected to be signed by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. It bars the nation's second-largest city from conducting business or reaching new contracts with Arizona businesses unless the immigration law is repealed, and also prohibits most city business trips to the state.

Let me get this right. A state that is bankrupt has one of it's major cities boycot AR. What is the biggest contributor to CA problem. Welfare, unemployment and Illegal's. This is BS. LOS ANGELES - Los Angeles on Wednesday became the largest city yet to boycott Arizona over its tough new law targeting illegal immigration in a move that likely will affect some $8 million in contracts with the state.

The City Council voted 13-1 to bar Los Angeles from conducting business with Arizona unless the law is repealed. The vote followed an emotional council discussion during which many members noted that their ancestors were U.S. immigrants.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa already has said he would approve the boycott.

Arizona will probably save Billions in state aid, incarceration, etc if they kick them out.... I'd bet they're not too worried about the boycotts.

Stupid thing is, these functions are planned mostly years in advance. To find another venue will either be very "costly" (kinda like getting an airplane ticket at the last minute) or unobtainable. The participants & associates of these functions will get po'd pretty quick - more than likely the jackasses making these decisions will not have a job next election...

I feel bad for the people......business owners......in Arizona that are going to suffer from this, once again everyone decides to punish the 'people' and not the state! Can't people see through that fog that is in front of their faces that they are only hurting people like themselves that are trying to make a living?
