I don't know what in the world got me into this tangent of looking at tunnels today (oh yeah it was a pic of a tunnel on our internal company picture of the day page) but I thought this was a cool site
http://www.kyrailtrail.org/gallery/KY-R ... els?page=1
It has pictures of the Burnside Tunnel as well as MANY others:

More info
http://www.kyrailtrail.org/lctf.html
I don't know where this one is but I thought it was pretty wild to see such a nice one blocked off and no pavement etc.
wonder what it was used for...
Here is one for PoopGirl Barb

Hmmm here is one I am guessing that is on the lake

Can't say I have ever noticed it...
Here is the old vehicle one that most people see around Burnside

Here is a link to some pictures and info about the construction of the new bridges on the Ohio River and the tunnel they are making in Prospect for the bridge.

I drove by the KY approach on Mother's Day. Very cool. It is a shame that we have to go underground because of a historical house on the land in the way of the bridge. Some times the tree huggers win and we all have to pay. Wonder what that added to the construction costs.

I was out there about a week ago. Pretty cool how they dig out the tunnel. I agree about the extra cost, I am sure it was a lot.

Just think, that section of road will never need the snow cleared off of it. That might pay for itself in 500 years. LMAO

I'm sure they will find a way to screw up that too. Probably push the snow into the tunnel to help it melt......

A fun google image search

Going along with what Scooter posted (
http://www.lakecumberland.com/forum/topic/33465-railroad-tunnels-on-the-lake/#entry401184 ) on the 1800s dates this page about the bridge out of the tunnel
http://bridgehunter.com/ky/pulaski/bh54685/
does state the Bridge was built in 1880 thus I'm sure the tunnels were by then if not before. The 1903 on the end of one of the tunnels must have been from repairs.
HistoryBuilt in 1880 by the Cincinnati Southern Railway, a company owned by the city of Cincinnati, Ohio. The line was operated by Cincinnati, New Orleans, & Texas Pacific Railway for a time then by Southern Railroad and Norfolk Southern,
This old thread used to have a lot of nice pics and info but the pics are now gone after the LC.com forum upgrade

It sounds like the rail and tunnels were in the works for quite a while...
Louisville tried to stop the rail..
http://cincinnatisouthernrailway.org/about/full-timeline.php
1870 - February 18th
Kentucky – Louisville specifically – proved more unwilling to allow the railway into its state, to the dismay of central and eastern Kentuckians. A colorful editorial in the Cynthiana Democrat that was quoted in the Cincinnati Commercial said, "The country traversed is willing and more than willing, but here comes in the mean envy of a second rate city that happens to be on our side of the river, to oppose it, like a dog in the manger… Cincinnati has as many Kentuckians, and friends of Kentuckians, among her people as has Louisville, the little snob."
This may be what caused the 1903 updates
1901 - November 5th
The citizens of Cincinnati overwhelmingly approved the modification and extension of the lease 47,486 to 15,168. On the same day, they approved $2.5 million in bonds for terminal facilities by a vote of 46,658 to 14,603
